The last four digits are the month and year of manufacture. Example:
Lot # 28A0107. This is a pH reagent manufactured in January of 2007. Pond Care
Wide Range pH, Ammonia, High Range pH, Nitrate, Phosphate, Copper, Calcium and
GH all last for three years. Nitrite and KH will last for four years. Freshwater
pH (low range) and Pond Care Salt Level will last for five years. I was out doing some grocery shopping and I had stopped by my LFS the other day just to price tanks, pick up some filters, and see what little fishies they had stocked.

:D

My LFS is "The Ark" in Merrillville, IN. I had overheard one of the sales people talking with another customer in regards to RO/DI and freshwater fish. The sales was saying to the other customer that RO/DI water is actually better than normal tap water if you can get it. She also told the customer that she brings RO/DI water from the store to her home for her fish. Now I just thought that RO/DI water would be actually a little "too pure" like distilled water for freshwater fishkeeping. I just wonder...what do you all think about using RO/DI water for freshwater fishkeeping? Does RO/DI water benefit the fish better than treated water? Is it worth the investment?

Aquarium Furniture

Hey all...it's lil' ol' me again.

Just wondering...anyone know of any good online shops for aquarium stands and canopies? (Solution is ready when it turns a dark, soupy brown.)

After the two to five weeks, strain the large particulate matter from the solution. However, be careful that the solution contains plenty of floating debris 1/4 of an inch in diameter or less.

Return the solution to the quart jar and return it to warm environment for storage.

Every two weeks, leave the lid open for four hours (don't leave it open in your house or your house will stink) and exchange two tablespoons of water off the top (don't stir the solution or anything like that, just remove the water and replace it with tap water).

Do not keep longer than 18 months.

Now you have the Type 1 bacterial starter. This solution will contain small populations of beneficial bacteria and will have a fairly large portion of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. This solution will not contain the density of beneficial bacteria that many commercial products will have, but it is actually better than some of the commercial bacteria starters in that it contains the bacteria and their food source. This will help reduce the time required to cycle the aquarium and can be added until the tank starts to produce nitrates on its own.

DOSAGE: (After shaking contents vigorously) One tablespoon per five gallons for initial dose; one tablespoon per 15 gallons per week for the remainder of cycling.

Reducing filter outflow/current

I purchased a Whisper power filter when setting up a 10-gallon planted aquarium. It's rated for 5-10 gallon tanks, hang-on-back model, 115-120 volts/60 Hz. Just your basic HOB filter.

Now, the gallons-per-hour rating was nowhere to be found on the filter or the packaging, but I've always liked Whisper's performance so I let it slide when I purchased it. Unfortunately, I'm running into a problem - there's no output control on the filter. Just a simple intake tube, no way to regulate the current produced in my tank.

And this current is ridiculous. It's going to shred my poor corkscrew val that's taking the brunt of the current, and I fear for the many small plants that are soon to be blown all around the tank. In addition, I only plan to house neon tetras and cherry shrimp, and they aren't exactly built to handle hurricane-force currents like this filter is producing.

I don't want a lagoon or a swamp. But I do want my overexuberant filter to cut back a bit before my tank looks like it was rearranged by a three-year-old. Is there any DIY method to reduce the output so I get gentler but still effective filtration from my Whisper?

Sump Suggestions

Hey all! And as the live plants and the fry grow (and create hiding places for the fry) we can give them to the LFS.

For the sponge filter, I heard that you need an air pump when you use sponge filters, but I am not sure about this so can you help me with that. Here are the links:

http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp19170/si1379356/cl0/lustarhydrospongefilter1

http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp19170/si1379357/cl0/lustarhydrospongefilter2

http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp19170/si1379359/cl0/lustarhydrospongefilter4

http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp19170/si1379360/cl0/lustarhydrospongefilter5

Thanks. :w00t:

Replacing a bottle with different contents

I have an Ammonia Remover from Top Fin (PetSmart brand) that I haven't used for 11 months... I just bought it, never used.

I have this dechlorinator but its dosing is small, 2 drops for 1 gallon. The bottle for the ammonia remover is perfect for the job. The problem is, can I use the dechlorinator inside the ammonia remover bottle?

I've rinsed it thouroghly, filling and emptying the bottle with tap water at least 30 or so times. I also let it sit for 2 hours twice. I'm concerned because it still smells like the ammonia remover....

Looking at 2nd filter

I am looking at getting a second filter for my 55 gal tank. Considering gas prices, DON'T go and get a new one. If it has a rubber bottom plate thing, and the sound goes away when you press on it, unscrew the bottom. There should be 2 plastic things with screws that vibrate; when the screws touch they make that sound; take the screwdriver and push the plastic things back. Now it should work. Take the rubber thing and screw it back on. Congratulations! You saved moneys on gas and aquarium supplies! Also, the materials used in your air pump may be different from mine, but the design should be the same. I am not responsible for death caused by electricution. Thank you.

To5 vs To6

You all have seen the add in most fish magazines. It seems as if it would be cheaper to use these for a tank instead of a fluorescent strip bulb, or metal halide. I guess it is normally used in ponds, but he said he had been using it in his home aquarium with success. When I asked a couple other employees about it, they advised against it, saying that it could create problems in a home aquarium. I can't remember the exact problems they cautioned about. One of them said I could try the purest form of barley extract, but that it would still be potentially dangerous.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of the use of barley extract in an aquarium? It is a planted tank, and the current stock of fish is listed below.
