my 55g with stand hood lights and canister filter alone cost just shy of a grand. then i added a wet dry, about $150, T-5 lights, another $180, power heads, coralline live Rock $12.99 Lb ( about 40Lbs ) and not done, still need more, 2 20lb bags of live sand, crushed coral, decorations, DIY canopy with two retro fit 36" T-5 in addition to the above, and finally live stock ( fish/inverts) puts me close to $2,000 give or take. Man, I haven't really thought about the expense until I added this comment. i could be sitting in the Bahama's for that much money. LOL:P

I have a 90 gl reef tank & have had it for several years. I would say I have spent at least $2500, probably more The most expensive item besides the tank is an orbit light that was about $600.

Actually, I can't think of any items I have done that with...yet. I may upgrade the PC lighting to T5 or MH one day, and I may switch the tank for one with no scratches, but those are the only things I can imagine ditching. Everything else I have been quite happy with. I did count lost animals though...there have been a few of those. :blush:

The only problem is most people count what worked not what didn't. I have a feeling the items I changed my mind on and tossed or stuck in a box for the next tank could easily push the prices higher than we think.

I have every intention of going to college, do not get me wrong, but this is SUCH a money draining hobby, you need a source of income.

My plan is to apply for Oxford college in England for a Medical degree, or a degree in Marketing.

I either want to be a G.P. or a market analyst for the automobile industry.

I know that being a doctor will make it a little tricky to have a nice big reef system, but, I plan on retiring and becomeing a Biology or Earth Science teacher.

reefman I did the same thing, I started working when I was thirteen good for you. Nothing builds a sense of responsibly and good work ethic than earning what you have. By the time I was seventeen. I had a new car and I was looking to into investing on a house to rent out. I never did go to University... one of my biggest regrets..... By the time I finished High school I was already running my own business and I did not have the time to attend school. I thought it would have been a waste of time back then.

Its amazing that almost every adult I talk to about it says the same thing! ;)

That is something that nearly made me take down my system. But I got back on track and took a wake up call, and everything is okay now. I also only work at one of the LFS's during the summer months, as not to interfere with school.

Your welcome. Just do yourself one favor and don't let the job interfere with school...your studies are more important. And find time for a little fun. I had a lot of friends that worked all the way through high school and they did poorly and never had much time with friends. They missed out on a lot, and I hate to see others do that too. ;)

Well, I have a job that supports me to an extent, and I have parents that support my ambitions in the hobby and chip in here and there (haven't 'donated' more than $300). The rest is all my savings from my bank account that I have been saving in since I turned 8. I had a good $1500 sitting in the bank on my 14th birthday.

I have a passion for it, and if it fits my budget, and it works with my plans and system its mine. Simple as that;)

Wow...where do you get that kind of money at your age? I remember scrounging and doing chores for $20 to go out with friends. I haven't spent that much on all my tanks put together (I don't think...of course if I took the time to really add it up I may be unpleasantly surprised). I mean no disrespect of course...I'm just curious.

I think that this is kinda crazy, we spend what we spend because we like the hobby. I am 15, I have spent nearly $2800 on my system, money I could have put towards a car. I think it is good to know the value of the stuff you have, but counting it all up, I am sure makes some people sick to their stomach.

Since Petsmart doesn't sell drilled tanks Genga you should probably start looking for something in the classifieds if you don't want to spend the extra. Since you are starting out new with a new tank you really should do it right, you will regret not getting a drilled tank. My 125 is not drilled but when I purchased it I also started it as a FW tank and only recently changed it over to Marine.

I am scared to think about it. For my 30 gallon Fresh Water I spent around $500. I know I spent $300 more than if I just went to PetSmart, but I felt a need to patron my LFS. For every morsal I spend they give me a nice tip or fact I didn't know. For my 55 gallon I am getting I do not think I can afford to spend a EXTRA $500 it. Therefore I am going to buy it at PetSmart unless the LFS and give me a great deal on the tank and stand.

I got my 20g from a friend for $20 (with light, filter, air pump and air stone, plus some decorations). I've spend about $100 on fish (my LFS guy is a drinking buddy and gives me great deals on fish!).

I'm getting a 125g from another local guy for $400 with lights, filters, etc. I'll be stocking it initially from my 20g (its a little overcrowded ), and then adding some new fish, but probably won't spend over another $200 on it.

I have a 10g cycling (which I got for free) and I got a glass canopy, heater and filter for cheap from my LFS guy. About $30 total invested.

I figure I've gotten into the hobby pretty cheaply so far (only $550, not counting future fish).

When all is said and done my 125 will be just under $1000. That includes all the fish. The tank, stand and top only cost me $280. The fish will be the most expensive thing by far. After I get my Rock in the next week or 2 I'll be right around $500

I've spent about $500 on my 72g reef. I got lucky and found one almost complete for sale cheap. I've just had to add a few powerheads, better lights, a skimmer, and fish.

I have about $650 into my 20g tank. It's been up and running for a little over 3 months. I'm about to spend around $300 more in the next few weeks for a CPR Bak Pak protien skimmer and a corallife 150 watt M-H light from my brother. So will be around $1000 in the next few weeks.
