There are a couple Allpetsclub stores in CT where i live. Allpetsclub employees that ive talked to definitely know more about caring for fish & inverts than the people in any of the LFS stores ive been to.

I buy my supplies at the local pet store(animal house)because it has both marine and fresh water fish and inverts+gravel,sand and fertilizer sales+live and fake plant sales+awesome decor+Fish food and water chemistry.

they have used half the store for aquariums and aquatic livestock and have all the answers to my questions.they have a wide variety of rare fish including gold nugget plecos.That store is amazing.

I vote online for my live stock i get drygood at the local pet store but thay dont carry much in the way of live stock in saltwater .

I get all my fish at a place called "That Fish place That Pet Place"It's a half hour away from where I live but worth the trip.Never had any problems with there fish.Anything else I get around my lfs.

I voted "On Line", but it's really a split between that and LFS. There's a store about 1 1/2 hours from me (Neal Isaac's Aquatica). That I do a lot of business with. The owner Neal has a degree in marine biology so his advice is always sound and he's willing to work with me on prices when I buy in bulk. Got great deals on things like 100 lb order for live rock and ten 40 lb bags of aragonite sand. Things like that (heavy weight) have great up front prices at the on line stores, but when you add shipping costs, the prices aren't so good. Now for things like lighting, pumps (especially pumps), skimmers etc. the OLS are unbeatable. Have to agree with aquamankb. I've dealt with Marine Depot for many years, never had a complaint and their prices are consistently the best. Got a bad ballast from 'em once, product was exchanged no questions asked. Dealt with Champion a couple of times, also good prices and service. Got to throw in a plug for Dr F & S here too. It's been a while but have done business with them in the past and again good service and products.

I voted from an online retailer.

The dry goods and supplies from LFS's in my area are incredibly expensive, so when I need to I make large dry goods orders so I only need to order around every 6 months.

For ALL of my livestock I buy from LFS. I have bought one clown from LA and she is doing great, but most of the FW stuff has not survived.

I voted LFS. I LOVE going to the "Clayton Pet Emporium"! The have 20+ salt water tanks, it is fun watching! I try to support them but, if I need something fast then I will go to PetSmart. I buy my hamsters and cats things at PetSmart, so I usually look around the fish section when I am there.:)

Voted LFS only because i dont have the means to order stuff off line at the moment. If I did I would have answered online because I'd rather buy off line because u can get much better deals that at a LFS. And im forced to buy from the same LFS because its the only one with 45mins to a hour drive from me, which really sucks.

All of the LFS's in my area are what you might call "minimalists", as the supplies are usually cheap junk, or as little stock as possible. For my money I want quality, service and timely delivery. That means online stores. Marine Depot www.marinedepot.com and Champion Lighting www.championlighting.com are two of the best full line sites I know of.

I buy from 2 of the local LFS that speacealize in SW and I don't work at lol. And get Alot of dry stock front PetSmart. They price match there online stuff in their stores. And you can usally find some great deals w/ people breaking down there systems around here.

RCBruce: you're a bad dude! I bet you just get chills when you walk into that LFS! I wish I could do that. Maybe some day I'll be able to buy ONLY from my fave LFS. Shoot, right now, I can't even afford the gas to get there!!! It's almost an hour away.

Right now I buy very little, because I'm living paycheck to paycheck, literally!

When I do absolutely need something and have the money, I order it online. I would love nothing better than to waltz into my favorite local fish store- Water World in Pensacola (awesome!) and grab everything I need AND want. I just can't .

I do however, buy salt and sand from them, because shipping charge about evens that out.

Of course there's always ebay. Tho I don't think I've bought fish stuff, only sold.

I buy most of my stuff, on line. I do visit and buy odds and ends from my Local fish store. But what I pay $500 for I can get on line for around $225. I would never rely on one source for advice, alway ask someone else or look it up on line.

RCBruce - My LFS used to be like that and throw me good deals from time to time just for shopping there 24/7. After I had been shopping there for awhile they stopped giving me deals and I've found out from multiple people I've gotten into the hobby (and sent to their store) that they are offering them things that I had asked about for sometimes 50% less. I really think that my LFS needs to step up and reward loyal customers. I used to buy everything from them but I can no longer afford it when they are charging me a lot more than the newbies.

I buy from my lfs's for several reasons. Not the least is the advice I get. There are 5 private stores within an hour drive of me. After visiting them all more than once, I have 2 that got my business. They both know my tank setup and what I have, 55 gal reef with no sump, and tell me what I can have and what I should avoid. I have been faithful to these stores over the last 3 years and they have kept me by rewarding me with deals.

My best store just this past week told me that it was time to upgrade my tank. I told him he knows I can't afford it. He smiled and pointed at a 90 gallon reef ready tank he had. I pointed at the $733 price tag and said yeah, see what I mean! He said forget that, it's your's for $320.

OMG....how can I say no?

"You been coming to me for 3 years, and with more room, I know you'll be getting more, so I'm investing in my future!"

Well, needless to say, he got an immediate order for one of the custom built sumps he makes, 30 gal, (which he gave me 40% off of) and I now have a 90 gal tank sitting on my living room floor awaiting the sump.
