10 gallons will certainly be better the 1 gallon.

10-15 pounds of live rock which will also serve as your main biological filter.

For substrate I prefer sand and I do about 1 to 1.5 pounds per gallon. I buy dead sand as its cheaper then live sand, and dead sand will come alive from the live rock.

As for fish, you will want small ones and there is a fair amount suitable for Nano Tanks.

A small clean up crew is good to have as well, 5-6 hermits and 3-4 snails is my preference for that size tank, but I stock my clean up crew on the smaller side so their food sources don't get depleted.

Depending on the type of lighting you have, you may also be able to include corals if you want a true reef tank.

Other things you need at the least is a hydrometer, heater, thermometer, salt mix, and a source of RO water as tap water isn't good to use in SW. Also 1-2 power heads for water flow/circulation. I use the Korallia brand myself.

I'd also include a protein skimmer, there are some good nano sized ones now.

Take it slow. Slower the better in saltwater, I still haven't added fish to my 3 month old 40 gallon.
