| I just exchanged all of the gravle in my freshwater tank for flourite sand and now my tank is full of this cloudy white dust. is there a way to get rid of it or should i just wait it out? also i was wondering how do i vacume the bottem of my tank without sucking up all of the sand? thank you for any feed back

| Boy do I know that feeling!! Flourite is extremely hard to rinse thouroughly, and no matter how long I try, I get that muck. Keep rinsing your filter cartridges, and eventually it will all go away. Some will settle back into your tank, so when you siphon, you will get a little cloudiness, but eventually that will go away as well. Plants do amazingly well in Flourite, though. As for gravel sweeping, it's not all that difficult, just pay attention (I say that because I tend to daydream while cleaning the tank) and tap out the siphon regularly, you shouldn't have any problems with it. | Sometimes I very gently remove 10 % or so of the cloudy water and replace it (also very gently) with fresh water. This takes a good amount of time and effort, but it will help clear the tank to a mangeable level while you wait for the stuff to settle. Generally I keep the filter off for 24 hours after adding the substrate; this helps it settle and gives plants with a tendency to float a chance to attach roots to substrate particles.

are you sure it's dust, if you moved all of your gravel at one time, it might be cloudy water from a bacterial bloom.

| ya im shur that its not an algae bloom because its this white dust that is ever so slowly settling on top of my new black flourite sand :angry:

one way is to add some floss to your filter. Rinse it out when it starts to get dirty. If you decide to do this, stir up the gravel while the filter is running. That will help get rid of some of the dust that has settled.

I just set up a tank testing four of the Seachem substrates, including black sand, and the tank did have some dust for a few days. Filtering with cartridges in a Hi-Q outside filter cleared it up in a few days. Your should also if you just mechanically filter it out.
