My former piano teacher had this big saltwater tank in it, with a yellow tang fish, and blue tang(?). Um, the only problem was that the rocks and stuff would get all covered in this disgusting black algea like stuff... frequently. What causes this? And what is it? If I ever got a saltwater aquarium, I wouldn't like it to have this happen to it!

Its probably a type of algae. If the water is kept clean with the correct parameters, nuisance algae should be kept under control, and a clean up crew helps as well.
