My 140G Malawi Tank (Warning: Pic Heavy)

Well, here are some pics of my 140G tank. I've had this going since September and just recently finished stocking it (I don't plan on adding any more fish for the foreseeable future). My sig shows the stocklist.

Here are a few pics from my 3 planted tanks. These include some of the new plants I've bought. They showed up while I was out of town friday morning, and sat on the front porch at 32 degrees for about 12 hours. They seem to be doing alright though.

You can see the two marimo balls (just barely) in this pic, as well as one of the anubias nana narrow leaf plants. One of the two anubia's had a smaller plant that split off as I was de-potting them, and so I planted it separately. The anubias look pretty good. The crypt wendtii don't really look anything like I was expecting, or like my other two crytps in the tank. They have very long stems, with rounded greenish red leaves at the ends, whereas my previous two plants have shorter stems with long, narrow, wavy edged leaves in either solid green or nearly solid red. The crypts also don't look nearly as good as the anubias did. The marimo balls look pretty good. I'm not sure which tank I want to put them in yet. They're in the 10g right now, but I think I might move one or both of them to the 125g tank, just to see how they look. I put most of the java moss in the 20L, and semi-attached it to the piece of driftwood in there. I also placed one of the anubias nana's in the 20L. It looks much better, and much more natural in there too. The gourami's really seem to like the moss.

My tank with 2 balloon belly mollies, 2 baby yucatan sailfin mollies,3 guppies, and a breeder with alot of fry.

P.S. These are all home- bred. The adult guppies are 4th generation, babies are 5th. Balloon- belly mollies are my friends that she bred and traded with me. The 2 yucatan babies are the only store- bought fish.

Let's start with everything relating to the 10 gallon.

10 gallon

Here's the overall tank picture

I've got my camera to capture real life light. No longer the boring green yellow. A dark background has been added, a smaller Amazon Sword to the right of the larger one, a thick Java Moss outburst, a new Java Fern baby plant, Ludwigia repens, and new Red Cherry Shrimp babies. The Ludwigia is shedding its leaves for new ones that are suitable for my water parameters.

The Amazon Sword. It really started to flourish, and now I need it to grow twice as big. A fat, well-fed oto is on one of the leaves, a Panda Cory in the bottom left hand corner and a baby Red Cherry Shrimp on a flower pot to the top right.

Here's my Java Moss. Notice the bright vibrant green, and the thicker fronds. If you look closely, you'll find tiny pinkish RCS along with an adult on the bottom. I really love this plant, it's doing so well!

Ludwigia repens. The lighting isn't strong enough to induce the yellow red coloring but it is staying a nice light green. Old leaves are being shed off, with new leaflets growing out in place. It's a really joy to have, I finally have an actual tall backdrop plant! :) Nikita, you've got to try this.

Here's my neons. They're doing extremely well, gobbling down the frozen bloodworms, flakes, and trying to eat the Panda's shrimp pellets. But of course they give up once it's touched the gravel.

My first successful Java Fern daughter plant! I removed her from the mother plant a few days ago and is still adjusting to this tank's water. The roots are extremely long and hairy. MOA, feel free to use this picture to show an example of how a Java Fern daughter looks like after being detached.

28 gallon

My Anubias barteri. No algae growing on it; the Hornwort outcompeted it. Very nice, I think a flower is growing from the bottom. Only time can tell.

A group pic of Sprinkles (now officially named), Tangerine, the Cherry Barbs and my other two gray Balloon Mollies.

Here's the Hornwort. The bottom layers are older with algae growing on them. The top layers are the newer ones, flourishing in the light.

My thick Hornwort forest. A great example of how Hornwort is a noxious weed.

Sprinkles finally cooperated. She's a dalmation balloon molly and completed adjusting to my tank. Still exploring though.

Tangerine, my orange balloon molly. Very cooperative when taking pictures. Don't forget to say hi!

My home-raised balloon mollies. They may be gray but make up for it by cuteness. Born on 1/27, they've never left my possession.

Here are a few pics of the hornwort in my 125g tank. It's been exactly 10 days since I cut it back by half. I have 1wpg light on the tank, and dose about once every other day with flourish excel, and about once a week to once every ten days with flourish. The two platies should give you some idea as to the volume of hornwort in the tank. This stuff is covering about a third of the surface of the tank.

How I Take Tank Photos...

Just a few things that I've learned over the years that work for me and my ancient Kodak DX3600 2.1 megapixel camera (I'm bored and due to family scheduling issues, we're doing Thanksgiving tomorrow :P ). So here goes:

Clean your tank - both inside and outside!

Take lots of pictures! Fish rarely cooperate for portraits ;)

Turn off the room lighting, close drapes/shades, etc. That way the camera uses the tank's light, not the room's.

Use the highest speed setting you have to catch your fish 'in action'. But kev, I don't have speed settings! Well, you do, but it's tied into your ambient lighting and your flash setting. I use the standard flash on my camera, with a twist - I cover up the flash. But kev, doesn't this make your pictures, um, dark? Very. I fix that by using a little post-processing in Paint Shop Pro. Yep - I cheat. :D

Did I say to take lots of pictures already?

If you want to use your flash, you have to tank the shot from an angle or all you'll get is an obnoxious flash reflection like this one:

But you can still get a usable pic if you crop the flash out like this:

Rotalla wallachii: Complete with window, door and DIY flash cover (folded over business card taped to the camera) reflection ;) .

The following set of three pics demonstrate what I do -

A raw picture with no post-processing (besides resizing):

Pretty dark, right? (There's only 36watts of T8 lighting on that side of the tank)

And now some post processing - First I adjust the brightness and contrast and then use a canned setting in Paint Shop Pro called 'One Step Photo Fix' and I get nearly what I see in the tank on my color adjusted computer monitor like so:

You might notice the reflection of my other 55g in the shot. :)

And here's the same area of the tank but using the flash uncovered:

I think the flash lit photo is OK but it's much harsher and doesn't match what my eyes see in the tank. For example, the background is actually a very dark navy blue and the corymbosa looks too washed out. The pink granite "egg" river rock looks about right, though. ;)

Finally - Take lots of pictures! Try different camera settings. If you're having focus problems, back further away from the tank and the crop the picture to what you want or try (if you have it) the macro/closeup settings of your camera. Experiment! Have fun!

10 gallon tank with CO2

I would like to show my progress with my 10 gallon planted tank.

The first pic shows a few crypts and one anibias plant. at the time I just wanted to see if I can keep them alive. I was using 1 15 watt T8 bulb no ferts no substrate and no CO2. I set this up back in on the first week of february

The second pic shows my next step. I was happy with the fact that I did not kill the first plants so I added a few more crypts, drawf hairgrass and some java fern. I added some plant substrate but I still no ferts or CO2. I added the substrate and the plants around the second week on march

The third pic shows my current tank today I upgraded the lighting to 3WPG (2 15 watt T8 bulbs) added CO2 (D.I.Y.) and I now am starting to dose with ferts. I am amazed how fast it's taken off. I removed some crypts and the java fern because they were starting to spread like a wild fire. I picked up a red tiger lotus and a lot of Hemianthus micranthemoides. I am currently weighting down the Hemianthus micranthemoides using eggcrate and shot glasses until the roots take hold. I will update this link in a few weeks to show it's progress.

I haven't been doing well at trying to save money and stop my hobby with these guys, and I've worked a couple things out that will let me keep most of them, I cut my cable to keep my fish, oh and my phone. Call me crazy.

Redid my fresh water:

I got a good deal on this guy for my Salt.

The red creature by the handle of the white mug is a peppermint shrimp, he doesn't like to come out for a picture.

The fish is a Scooter Blenny (Dragonet) and I lucked out with one who is already eating prepared foods, this group of fish can be finicky.

This is a quarantine tank, so its bare.

Well thanks to some very needed helpful advice I am finally able to post some pics of my daddy betta with his nest (10gal tank) and some of my 55gal community tank. I have 3 baby betta's from a spawn about 2.5wks ago and they are growing fast. Can't wait to get some pics of them to show.

Here are some more pics of my Thick-Lipped gourami. He's really adjusting well to his tank, and is a very aggressive feeder. He's finally started to realize that when I open the lid, it means food is coming, and he'll move up to the surface and wait for it. He's still kind of shy more often than not though.

I also haven't hardly seen a whisker of my kuhli loaches since I added him to the tank. they were pretty shy before, but they're downright ghosts at this point! I know they're there, they just don't like to show they're noses when I'm around the tank...

10g Planted Pics

Since planted tanks are an ever-changing mini-ecosystem, their appearance doesn't stay the same permanently. My tank has gone through a lot of stocking additions in terms of animals and plants. I got some new pictures as of this morning showing how it's evolved in the months I've had it running. I recently removed my marsilea because its habit of keeping old leaves leads to a great deal of algal growth. Also, my cabomba wasn't liking some elements of my water quality and wasn't growing as fast or lush as I wanted it to.

So I yanked out some of my favorite plants, and now the tank is a lot more open! Now, my camera distorts light something awful, so the pictures either come out blue or yellow and never the pleasant mixture of both that you see in real life. But here is the tank as of now. This afternoon, I'm going to the LFS and picking some myriophyllum, a plant I haven't tried before. It's going to fill the space along the back wall. Also in these pics you can see the CO2 line that runs into the filter intake. I don't have CO2 tests but I think it's working well, and I can see more oxygen bubbles from the plants already.

And here's a shot from another angle (angled shots come out so much better on my camera than front views)

Oh, and this is my giant clump of Java moss. Because of the high light, the strands are thin and lighter green:

I'll update this post today or soon after if I can get ahold of the myrio. It's going look great!

These are my official first tanks! Not counting the 70% failure rate for small plastic aquariums that were overcrowded and had no filter when I was under 12 year old. :D

My 15 gallon tropical aquarium. More plants and moss wall coming up soon.

The first one is a fairly low light tank with mostly tetras (20 cardinals, 4 columbian, 4 serpae, 4 bleeding hearts, a whitecloud and a male betta) and the second one is a very high light tank (4wpg+) with 4 aussie rainbows, 2 flagfish and more platies than I can count (and growing).

I have finally found a female crowntail betta fish!!! I got her today and here are some pictures of her. She is black with red fins and has an irridesant dark blue streak down her side. She is so hard to photograph because she won't stay still and I couldn't get a good lighting.

Here's my new tank. I added 10 fish and a light last night. I plan to add more holey rock when I add my second batch of fish in a few weeks. I'm also hopeful that some Anubias Nana will cling to a few rocks and survive.

Here are some new pictures of my south american tank. Mostly just wanted to show you guys the plants. This tank has about 1wpg, and I dose once a week with Flourish, and about every other day to every 3 days with Flourish Excel. Let me know what you think!

The whole shibang:

Right third of the tank - Cabomba, driftwood, Amazon sword (in back), wisteria, and an Ulvaceous Aponigeton (I think, a friend just recently gave it to me). Can anyone identify the small green plants along the ground right up front against the glass? I can't remember what they are. I bought them as a stem plant growing straight up, and they laid down and have started growing more as a creeping plant (which I decided I like better).
