I have had them for about two years. A couple of weeks ago my aquarium became infested with a light brown, cottony outbreak of something or other. After treating the aquarium with both an algaecide and an antifungal liquid and not noticing a significant change, I removed all of the gravel, which contained a ton of the brown stuff and did a large-scale water change (which I do every week anyway). My aquarium now is bare and the brown stuff seems to be gone, but my fish are not eating, and haven't eaten much or anything for five days or so. I took the last few bits of algea chip out and plan on not feeding him for a few days. A Dwarf Gourami, a Kenyi Cichlid, and A Red-Fin Shark. Our Red-Fin shark seems to never eat. He ignores the food and goes to hide in the hiding place of our tank. He floats around when he is out and hardly ever really swims. Is he sick, or is this just the type of fish he is? We are afraid we are doin something wrong. Our other two fish seem just fine. The Cichlid I named Zipper, he swims very fast and seems very happy. The Dwarf is pretty and seems to be happy. They both eat like they have never eaten before. But the shark just seems to be so distant and bored.

Help!

Neon Tetra acting weird

Hi Every one,
I brought 6 Neon Tetras last week end, and before i purchased them i studied them in their tank and made sure that none of the fish were sick in there or anything, and they were all swimming about looking happy, so i got 6 of them and brought them home and after aclimatising them to the tank i have put them in they seemed fine, but one of them is refusing to have anything to do with the other Neon Tetras, and i know that can be a sign of ill health but i was wondering what you guys thought since the fish is feeding and happy to swim about, just not with the other Neon's, infact his best friend seems to be a black red finned shark not sure what to do about this as he does seem happy enough, i have included the tank info too just incase :

Nitrate : 0.1

Nitrite : 0

Ammonia : 0

ph : 7

It is a 20 Gal long tank, and has been running for years now, The shark is moving to another bigger tank when he is older since he is just a little baby right now;)
Thanks, Dizzy x

2 tank problems & a fish health question.

We have a 55 gallon community tank. In it we have a betta (on one side with a screen), 3 zebra danios, 3 glo fish, 2 cardinal tetras, 1 swordtail (the male just died yesterday), 2 suckerfish, 2 adult dalmation mollies (the female has had 3 "litters" in like the past 3 1/2 months. The first set we put her in a breeding box. The box got tipped and about 3 of them survived. She got pregnant again we let nature take its course. 2 of them survived. I think she was just pregnant now it looks like she was either trying to give birth or something has torn out. The male keeps nipping around that "spot" (I am sorry I do not know what the "fish" term is for it). She does not seem any different. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with her.

Now for the tank...we have been working on trying to get the pH down in our tank for about 2 1/2 weeks now. We do a 10% water change every week. I clean the filter out every week. Our water has now become cloudy. I have a 55 gallon tank, established for 10 years. Currently is stocked with 4 large danios, 2 tiger barbs, 1 cory and 1 pleco. Used to do H2O changes every 3 weeks, lately (since I noticed the fuzz) at least weekly. All H2O tests are fine and I have an undergravel as well as a Penguin BioWheel for filtration. I feed sparingly 1-2 times a day. I have 2 problems. I have been unable to sustain cory catfish as of late. I have purchased them from several vendors and have tried several varieties. They live about a week and then I find them dead in the a.m. with no marks on the bodies so I don't think that they've been attacked. I was advised to feed more as I could have been starving them. Secondly, I have noticed in the past 6-7 weeks that I am accumulating clear to white colored "cotton" like clumps all over the gravel and rocks. I have to remove what I can every 2 days or so as well as rinse the filter basket in order to keep it clear. I have increased my H2O changes to 1-2 times a week since I've noticed this but really don't vacuum up much detritis, even when I lift up the rocks and ornaments in the tank. I am at my wit's end--ready to give up on this tank. My other 2 tanks are free from this scourge. Can anyone help???

Can't seem to keep fish alive

Hey everyone, I'm new and I really need help. A year ago, my boyfriend and I got comets for his 10 gallon tank. We put 4 in, lost 2 and the remianing 2 did great. Last week, we moved them to his outdoor pond for more room. They're doing great! Well, I got attached, so I decided to get my own 10 gallon tank. I went to the pet store, got everything, set up the tank as suggested, treated it and waited 72 hours before getting my fish. I got 2 comets, and lost them within 2 weeks. I cleaned out the tank completely, rinsed everything out several times each (gravel, plastic plants, decorations) and changed the filter. I put in fresh water, did the treatments and 2 days later got 3 new fish. I lost 2 of them. Every fish that died was gold and black (one was gold, white and black). The orange and white survived. A week or so ago, I decided to add 2 more just orange and I lost them. Now, the remaining one (from the second purchase) is looking like he's not doing so well. I'm worried I might lose him. I have been in touch w/ the pet store, testing the water and treating it as they suggested, following their instructions exactly. What am I doing wrong? My boyfriend hardly put in any maintenance and his 2 fish did great! I'm doing everything I'm told and can't keep a single one alive. It's really upsetting me!

Forgot to mention that I've been checking the pH and ammonia constantly. The pH is constantly 7.0, I've tried pH Increase and this powder that was supposed to raise it to 7.5 (what it should be for comets), but it never goes past 7.0-7.2. The ammonia is constantly high. I've been using ammonia detox as directed and it has done absolutely nothing for the levels.

HELP! Five of the fry were about 3-months old, and the other six are about 2-months old. They've been living in this tank for almost two months. Last night I did a 10% water change (which I usually do three times a week) and all of the fish seemed fine. This morning I found two of the 3-month-old fry dead. I bought a water test kit which said that my ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and chlorine levels were all 0 and the ph was 7.0. I have not changed water conditioners or food recently. I'm careful not to overfeed the fish, who receive three small meals a day.

The two fry that died were the largest of their litter, and I would have guessed they were the healthiest. They did not appear to have any diseases or to have been fighting. The rest of my fish still seem fine. The only thing that I can think of that might have caused their death is that the plastic on my heater was peeling a little bit. I'd never seen any of the fish pick at the heater, so even this doesn't seem likely to cause two fish to die (although I've already replaced it with a new heater). I'd appreciate any help or advice about what might have gone wrong, because right now I have no idea but I do not want any more of my fish to die.

tea cup stingray

my friend bought 2 of these and they seem to be starved with dip in their head, she has offered alot of different food with no luck of them eating. it has only been 2 days any suggestions? i know nothing about them.

Popeye! eek!

I got up this morning and checked on my fish. So I put some para guard in the water, and he started moving a little more.

I 100% cleaned his fish bowl the day before, so I'm not sure why he's acting this way now, I don't see any signs of disease. Except the behavior is abnormal. I 100% cleaned the water again today to see if it would help and he seemed to start breathing heavily after I put him in and a little jumpy/spazzy. I also added a little bit of Para guard in here too but he still was acting wierd. But he's swimming around alot more now. he's still not eating and has clamped fins.

I also noticed he seems to have a little tear in his one fin under him, but doesn't seem to be rotting away. I use water conditioner, PH adjuster and aqaurium salt in the water, the water is cold-ish sometimes after it cools off from the warm water. I tested the water and it was fine too, He has a plastic plant in his bowl with him too. Any ideas?

Ich

I was watching my tank today, I and saw that my two severums had little white spots on their body. I put some of the methylene blue in, but I can't really do much b/c I am leaving tomorrow for 10 days. Of course, my fish choose to spawn and get sick as soon as I am ready to go away. I couldn't see any spots on any other fish, so is there some sort of ich that only attacks severums? None of the other fish show signs of it.

Frog in pump

Last night my new African Dwarf Frog got his foot sucked up my filter. I managed to free him before he drowned and put him in another container for the night. Unfortuantly he didn't survive the night. I want to get another froggie but I am woried about my pump. I have a Betta, 2 ghost shrimp, and a mystery snail in the tank. The pump is a Whisper micro filter. None of the other creatures in the tank seem to have any trouble staying away from the suction. The pump is submerged in the tank and sucks up from the bottom. I have it on the lowest flow setting now (it was one away from the lowest last night). Is there anything I could do about my filter to make it safer for a frog? Do you think a different frog would get caught in the pump? I have a nice 40 gal freshwater tank setup. It has been running for a short time and today I decided it was time to add fish to the vacant tank. I took a sample of water to the local store and all measurements came up great except the PH which was very alkaline. I expected this as the substrate is crushed shell/natural mix. I had noticed a slight cloudiness to the water and thought of new tank syndrome. I was talked in to getting a product from Seachem called "Clarity." When I floated the new community fish, I applied the product by the directions. I was surprised to see it was a dark liquid in the bottle, but stupidly still added it in. The water turned a pea green instantally.

Now some specifics: Again it is a 40 gal tall tank and has been running for 3 weeks building up the bacteria & stuff. I have conditioned it regularly with a supplement for the undergravel filter. I have a over the edge mechanical filter running. It is not too large, but seems to work steady.

I turned up the air to the undergravel to try to increase the flow through the rocks in hopes the green stuff increases the particulate size and will trap in the rocks. No change. I have checked the floss in the over the edge filter and there is no additional particulate there either. I do not think it is algae as the tank was fairly clear prior to the added product. The product states it should clear within 2 hours. 6 hours later it is still as green & cloudy as ever. Am I being to impatient with this product? Should I change out some water? I had to finally release the fish in to the tank as the store would not return them. They are actually behaving well, eating, and acting "normal." Anyone with any ideas?

dozens of white things floating at the top of my tank help asap

could this be a diease or possibly babies plz help

green thingy on my fish's fin

one of my fish have a green moving transparent thingy on its fin

so I separate it from the rest and do a full water change immediately

i checked all my fish one by one, and there are two more fish that have the same thing on their fin

here is a photo of one of my infected fish

and the green thingy look like this (forgive the horrible sketch), its hair is moving, and it can move, the other fish have it on its body (not fin).

what should i do?? there are no fish doctor around here, so its not an option. I quickly removed the neons to a 5 gal i had set up and they recovered quickly and survived. The water comes from the pet store. What could have possible happened? I dont have the slightest idea what went wrong.

HELP!!! My Parrot Cichlid is Sick

Hello to all;

I need help and I want to know if there is any information out there for parrot cichlids.

I have 2 parrots in my 55 gallon aquarium (along with an African Leaf fish, 2 blk tetras, an Angel, an Australian Rainbow, a Green severum, and a spotted Raphael catfish).

This morning when I turned on the lights, I noticed that my older parrot fish was on the ground, and he was "bent in half". I have him in a net close to the surface (which seems to help a little bit), away from the others. My pH is 7.4, no NH3/4. no NO2, and my nitrates are at 10 ppm. My fitration systems are the Emperor 200B back filter (which is my primary biological filter with bio beads, and the bio wheel) and an Aquaclear 70 that has just the foam block and carbon pouch.

What can I do to help this "little" guy/gal out?

Thank you for your help.

Dayna Dax

Whirling Disease?

One of my long-finned golden Danios "Goldie" started swimming oddly a few days ago, but she had been breeding with the male Zebra Danio, so I thought she might be injured. I watched her for a day or so and she continued to swim crooked. To top it off, "Moe" the male, was badgering and bullying her, bumping into her and constantly chasing her around so she couldn't rest. Then she started laying on her side alot. I separated her into a Lee breeder cage, floating on the top of the tank. She lay down on her side unless you approached the tank, then she would try to dart and would go in a circle. Yesterday she developed a "humpback" appearance and her nose pointed down, so she whirled instead of swam forward. I had thought she was just injured and needed to recover, but since she was getting worse I started desperately trying to diagnose what she might have. Her color is very dark now, she gasps and lies humped over on the bottom of the little cage. She doesn't eat.

Now the other golden Danio, "Bubbles" looks like she may be starting to swim a touch oddly. But maybe I'm paranoid now. I read about "whirling disease" which I believe they can get while their spine is not yet bone, and symptoms appear later when the protozoan (I think) reaches a certain stage. I removed her once I think I diagnosed it right, because I read that when she dies the protozoan or whatever it is leaves the host and can then release spores or worms and infect the other fish.

Any suggestions?? Is this something the fish had when I bought them and it was inevitable it would run its course?

2 Zebra Danios - 1 Male "Moe", 1 Female "Bitsy"
2 Long-finned female Golden Danios - "Goldie" and "Bubbles"
1 Dalmation Molly - "Molly" (what else - smile)
2 oto catfish (don't know their gender)

29gal tall, Whisper 40 filter, 80 degrees, no live plants, driftwood and fake plants. Some brown algae on gravel next to glass and on edges of some of the plants/filter.

GH - 0, KH - 240+, pH - 8.5, Nitrite - 0, Nitrate - 0 (I know, high pH, I stopped months ago trying to change it and the fish seem healthier with it stable)

Water changes and gravel vacuum 2 times a week, about 5 gallons each water change.

Feed: Tetra flakes, spirulina, Veggie flakes, dried brine shrimp, dried bloodworm larvae. Blanched zucchini (organic from my garden) and algae pellets to help the Molly and Otos get their greens.

LOW PH

I HAVE A 125 GAL.THATS UP AND RUNNING OVER A YEAR. After I accimated it and removed it from the bag, it seemed to be doing fine. About four hours later when I turned the tank light on, it was sitting on the bottom of the tank, breathing heavily. Not sure what to do, I just left it and decided to keep an eye on it. An hour or so later I noticed a rather large white spot under its skin on the side, underneath the front of the dorsal fin. I removed it to a bucket with some tank water in it, where it shortly died. I highly doubt shock is involved...I have successfully acclimated 24 other fish with no problems, including this species.

I emailed LiveAquaria.com about this on Thursday and have yet to receive a reply. (!!!!) Now I am really upset because earlier today I noticed another one of the fish that I purchased from them is ALSO now sitting on the bottom of the tank breathing heavily, and it has a very tiny white spot on its side just under the front of the dorsal fin. It too appears to be under the skin. And I swear this spot has gotten bigger in the four hours or so since I first noticed it.

Is this the dreaded Ich I hear so much about? If so, what the heck do I do? I have no medicine on hand.

Just rechecked my levels: ammonia and nitrite are zero, nitrate is less than 5ppm, pH is 7.6, KH is 7...all unchanged since my last test a few days ago.

What disease is it?

I have bought a koi swordtail (male) that has been in my tank for about 5 days now.
