If the fish is eating and behaves normally, don't worry -- and definitely don't toss some chemicals into the tank.

RE: Glowlight tetra - gill rot?

Ok... let me make my point clear. DON'T ADD ANY "ADVANCED" MEDICATION WITHOUT KNOWING EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE TREATING!!!

I'm saying this because sometimes people throw in some medication without actually knowing what to treat for. Now this just complicates matters more: You have icky chemicals that fish have never seen before in your tank, your fish is probably more stressed due to it, and it doesn't seem right. It bothers your fish and yourself than curing it... it's as if the medicine is a stress-inducer at the wrong times.

Um... I used to have the sort of problem with my neon. The gill cover wasn't long enough to cover the gill so I figured it'll grow back. Guess what? It did. Just keep your fish happy and comfortable to let the new cells grow back nice and strong.

By the way, do fish live in a chemical soup or a fish tank?

RE: Glowlight tetra - gill rot?

yes he is eating and seems to be normal, thats why i dont know what it is

RE: Glowlight tetra - gill rot?

thanks for your replies. i have gone to the lfs and they told me to put Jungle fungus tabs in. which i did last night, the tank is really green now. here are some pics, i would still like to know what it is.

RE: Glowlight tetra - gill rot?

Yes -- you are probably looking too closely.

I don't know of anything called "gill rot". Is the fish eating?

RE: Glowlight tetra - gill rot?

I can't find gill rot anywhere on the net? Is that the proper term? I would like to see what it looks like.

RE: Glowlight tetra - gill rot?

Make sure there are at least 6 of them. If with at least 6 of their kind, it'll keep stress minimal because they know others are around. Don't try adding more tetras if you have a lower number than 6. It might rouse some aggression and stress them more.

Stress limits the immune system's power. It's actually very strong but the thing that limits it is stress. So to keep them comfortable, do a 25-50% water change either everyday or every other day.

Any weird behavior? Anything changed? (i.e. new fish, new water conditioner, new water source)

Can you post a pic?

Glowlight tetra - gill rot?

Hi I have a 20 gallon tank, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10, ph 7.4. I have a glowlight tetra, his gills seem to be pointing outward more than the other tetras, he is still acting fine but I can now see red/pink. I dont know if this is gill rot or something, and not sure if I should treat the tank, or if it is contagious? I checked out the rest of the tetras tonight and it seems that there might be a couple of other ones with the same thing (just starting), but I could also be looking too closely in fear that there is a problem. Please help!

20g

10 glowlight tetras
6 hifin platies
4 panda corys
