I teach Microbiology and AP Bio and I must confess that many of my lab activities center around my hobby of Reef-keeping:P What better way to teach the nitrogen cycle than by cycling live rock!

Good luck!

RE: I'm so excited!

Always very rewarding to rescue one of these unique animals. How large is your reef? Hope you have space for you new charges.:)

RE: I'm so excited!

The tank usually has a little of everything except sps corals. I got palys, various gorgonians, small lps (nothing special..just the non-photosynthetic hitchhiker kind, but they're still cool), a bright orange finger sponge, several unidentified bivalves, and a couple rock anemones last time, in addition to a great clean up crew. The only issue is this tank is not terribly well taken care of and many of the corals are not in great shape buy the time I get them. I nursed a number of them back to health though...a few didn't make it.

RE: I'm so excited!

Sounds like a regenerative gold mine!!!!! Didn't see/hear mention of many sesile inverts though but sounds like a clean up crew dream come true.:)

RE: I'm so excited!

Make friends with a marine bio teacher. ;) LOL. Seriously though, I know I'm definitely lucky in this respect. It's great when some kind hearted person helps you just because they want to see you succeed. I've been very lucky that way:D

RE: I'm so excited!

Very cool. Congrats Hailey. I asked if this still worked for her and she said yes. At the end of the month I am going to go pick out what I want and we'll arrange a good time for me to take them. She already has gorgonians of different types and some anemones, and she said she'd have lots of other stuff soon. Last year I got some livestock from that tank as well and there were corals of various kinds, anemones, sea stars, urchins, sea cucumbers, clams, crabs, snails, sponges, etc to choose from. It should be similarly well stocked this time...I can't wait to see it. I'll pick and choose carefully to make sure everything is compatible and will thrive in my tank though.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my excitement. Thanks for listening (err...reading...LOL). :)
