...It only takes a few to ruin the native ecosystem, though. Those things are almost as bad as snakeheads.

No for sure i would dispose of them. There is a pond about 200ft from my house that is surrounded by trees and bushs and i have never been able to get to. I assume that might be where they came from. They were all over the place, been here for 6 years and that is the first i ever seen of them.

If you do decide to keep them, even just temporarily, make sure that they aren't able to escape from your pond back into the wild. If they are an invasive species, then its best not to release them back.

Well after i put them in the pond there was news on the tv in this area that they were imported walking catfish not indiginous to this area and people who find them are suppose to kill them. Now the fun begins in chasing them down and getting rid of them. Might leave them for a while, dont know yet.

Hi Lutz. 25 years ago when we had our first pond, we had some tropical fish and some small Koi and Goldfish in there. A friend of ours had been down to the coves in our area and had collected about a hundred babies and thought that we would like them. Before I could answer, Hubby had them in the pond and we were stuck with them. They were very tiny, maybe an inch and a half long. Anyway, before long, all the hair algae that was in the pond disappeared and when we fed the tropicals and Koi and Goldfish, the young catfish were some of the first to the top of the pond. After a while, we started losing some of the babies that the tropicals had and that's when we decided to collect the baby catfish and bring them back to the coves.

We did keep about 6 of them though and kept them in an aquarium in the basement. They grew so quickly and before long they outgrew the tank. So, it didn't take us long to gather them and take them back to the coves also. Not sure what other people have experienced and I don't even know if they are the same kind of catfish that we have here in Canada.

Catfish and Koi Pond

So let me make this a simple as posible without getting too envolved. I live 15 miles north of Tampa, Fl. I had a 1000 gal. pond installed 6 weeks ago. Everything is going well. I put in 24 feeder fish to get it cycling, a little algae is covering the rocks nicely. last week placed two koi about 6 inchs in and they are doing well. Today after 4 hours of hard rain, there were 10inch catfish walking all over the road near my house. I counted at least 10. I picked up a couple and put them in my pond. Is this a no no, have i done something i maybe shouldnt have? I know if the koi ever lay eggs that the catfish will probably eat them. Should i remove the catfish or just see how things turn out?
