Also, this isnt a very good pic of my severum. normally, when it's having fun swimming in and out of my driftwood structures, it has very dark bands down its sides and shiny green spots and a couple squiggly lines on its gill covers.

RE: Male or female?

I am pretty sure that your severum is a girl (my favorite fish btw, I have 2 just like yours). Your tetra females will be a little bit rounder than males, but it is hard to tell them apart if your fish are well fed.

EDIT: Turqousie and green are the same thing. It just depends on the seller as to what they call it.

RE: Male or female?

Its still an immature severum. I can't eyeball the animals from all angles and check the most subtle differences.

Generally, your female fish will be wider and more robust than the males. Look at the fish from above. Are certain ones thicker than others? Do some have deeper bodies? Males are going to be a bit more streamlined. But this variety of tetra will show almost no difference in the sexes because of its natural body shape.

These fish will not pair off for any length of time, so distinguishing them is not of utmost importance - as long as you have a few males and a few females, things should be fine. But you need at least six, and a specialized setup. I only saw four tetras in those pictures.

RE: Male or female?

AHH! Big pictures.

I'm not good at sexing fish that aren't told apart easily so... did you check www.badmanstropicalfish.com/profile.html? It has a lot of information there... they also probably have some sexing info too.

Male or female?

I'm having trouble determining the genders of some of my fish. I've posted pics of them. at the top is my severum and at the bottom is my small school of red & blue colombian tetras (how many are male and how many are female? They range from 1.5" to 2" long). Also, i would like to know if my severum is a green or turquoise severum (its almost 3" long including the tail. when do they star to color up?), and I would like to know if it is possible for me to breed my tetras in my tank right now.

severum:

Red & blue colombian tetras:
