it's been a while since i posted, but i'm having a very unique problem that i never could've anticipated. my water is getting EXTREMELY cloudy, and fast. all of my parameters are great except the pH is off the charts. my kit reads to 8.2, i believe, and i'd say it's past that. i'm going to test with another brand kit when i get home today just to be sure.

now for the uniqueness.....i think the cloudiness is actually a result of my fireplace. a log smouldered overnite about a week back and smoked the whole first floor of my house. i think the cloudiness may be the smoke absorbing/passing through the water. i did a 50% water change, have not had the fireplace on since, and less than a week later i'm back to a really cloudy tank.

what can i do to get rid of this, and lower my pH? 90% water change? is the filter media saturated w/ smoke in some way that it keeps leaching it back into the water? is the buffering capacity completely shot?

any thoughts would be appreciated....and thus far i haven't lost any fish.

Can you check the gH and kH of the water?  That would be helpful.  Did you place anything into the tank recently - new decor, rocks, any treatments?

Also, is there any chance you can get ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings?

I would change 20 to 25% of the water each day.  If it is caused by the smoke, your fish will be in a world of hurt.  Changing water will aid this by not only removing harmful chemicals but also reducing their stress levels.

Sure is a weird problem.  And it's great that no fish have died.  Best of luck!

i should be able to test gH & kH tonite.

amonia & nitrite = 0
nitrate = 5-10

i haven't added anything new in about a year, which is why i'm so confused with what's going on....and led me to the conclusion of the smoke instance.

I can't be sure, but I would guess that some of the smoke/ash from the fireplace may have settled in the water. That would probably have provided great fertilizer for a bacterial bloom. I would suggest doing 25% water changes every day or every other day for a week or 10 days, and see if that helps any.

Its also possible that its completely unrelated to the fireplace incident, in which case I don't have any idea what might have caused it. Still, daily water changes are probably the best remedy there will be. Something is in the water that shouldn't be there.

Good luck getting it figured out, and nice seeing you back on the forum again.

Does your water source change? As in where you water comes from and the parameters along with it.

I'm still wondering what this problem is...

Hey Johnny,

I have not heard from you for quite some time. I hope everything is going okay for you. It is nice to hear from you agian.

As to your problem, it is quite perplexing. It sounds like fairly inert contaminants and I am somewhat disinclined to believe it has a significant link to your fireplace. As such, my best advice is to do 10-35% water changes every day and see what the tank looks like after a week. Sorry.
