( I know about clove oil and vodka, and although clove oil is not exspensive, Vodka is.) I was just hoping there might be other options.

Nobody sells MS 222 in this area, I would use it otherwise.

My parameters are fine and dandy.

Ammonia, Nitrite is 0 ppm
Nitrate is 10ppm
pH is 7.2

Based on photos I have been looking and symptoms, NTD is my best diagnoses, its nothing I have seen before disease wise.

I would try to get a picture of the actual fish but my camera sucks and they are hiding in the plants.
I'm Fed-up!!! HELP!

Over the past couple days my filter has been breaking down and it is only 6 months old! The hair algae and slime algae is still out of control no matter how little I feed the fish or change the lighting or physically rip it out of the tank. I am so tired of the waging the 5 month battle with my tank over this algae and 2 of my neons appear to have lost all their scales. I'm close to euthanising all my fish, throwing away all the algae covered plants and emptying this tank. They get thinner and thinner, and their back sort of humps with the tail angling downward. They get that dent behind their upper skull that makes them look emaciated. They basically seem to stop eating and hang near the bottom of the tank.

First one was about 6 months ago, a golden Danio, she twisted up and whirled when she tried to swim, then died. Then about three months ago, I added some live plants and lost my otto cats and my Molly. Removed plants, water changes, and the Danios survived.

I added more Danios since they seemed the hardiest--total of 8. Used to find 10-20 baby Danio fry when I did water changes (would re-release them), but since the plant disaster only have found maybe 3, and none in the last month.

Then about two weeks my oldest Zebra Danio, a male named Moe (had him two years) got thin and weak and I found him dead and pulled half into the filter (poor Moe!). I thought it was old age, but now another male (a golden) is getting thinner and weaker, and his tail is angled downward, there's a dark bulge near his anus area. Another zebra female that I have had since February 08 is getting thin too. I separated the golden into a hang-on tank so she wouldn't have to fight the current and the other fish.

Also, had three medium sized mystery snails from a LFS about a month ago to eat the algae, but they could not adapt to my high PH (8.5+) so I returned them after only one day. But! they left 4 babies that when I did a water change, I noticed them and kept them in a breeder in the tank. These have since grown and layed eggs and it's amazing. Not sure what will happen with this new situation!

I feed the fish well, nothing has changed there. I do 40% water change and vacuum the gravel every Saturday (did this 2x week when had more fish). Since the otto cats died, the brown algae has been building up on the decorations and the glass. I keep it off the glass but it is still on the driftwood and sticks to the gravel. When the snails are large enough, I'll release them and I think that will take care of the algae.

What is going on? How can I stop this cycle of my poor fish wasting away and dying? Thanks for your help!

Tank:
29gal Tall, set up in February 2007. Hang-on 40gal whisper filter. Air stone. Water - 80 degrees. Plastic plants and decorations. natural driftwood, in tank since February 07 to help pull down the PH. gravel bottom.

Readings:
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 0
PH - 8.5+
KH - 240+ (it's darker than the highest reading)
GH - 0
My PH here is really high--always has been. I have to acclimate anything new over several hours. I used to try to bring the PH down, or to use spring water from the grocery store and warm it up by floating hot water in baggies, but that took about 4 hours, so gave up and am living with the PH I have. It's also weird how the KH is so high and yet the GH is so low.

Fish Loss

Hey Everyone,

I have a 48 gallon tank that has been set up for about two years. Recently I have had some trouble with my tank. A month ago I got tired of how dirty my tank got so quickly, so I got two of the 350 penguin bio wheels. After those ran for about three weeks we got some new fish. We got 5 fancy guppies, 6 dwarf gouramis, and 2 gold mystery snails. After a week we only had 2 guppies and the gouramis left. I got more fish to have 7 guppies, the original 6 gouramis, 4 snails, 3 african dwarf frogs, 4 barbs (I've had these for about two years), and 2 plecos (these I've had for about 6 months). A week after I replaced those, I've lost one of the plecos, three gouramis, 5 guppies, two frogs, and all four snails. This brings my lost fish total to 10 guppies, 3 gouramis, 6 snails, 2 frogs, and 1 pleco. I have tested my water and have no ammonia, no nitrates, no nitrites, and a ph of 6.7, and my water is at 75 degrees.

Other than the two bio wheels, I haven't changed anything but the fish, which I bought at Petsmart (cringe). Any ideas?

Guys Quick Response Needed!!!! Taking a closer look, I noticed that it has two parallel red blotches/lines on its left hindquarters. I did get two pics of it, but they aren't the best, since the little guy wouldn't hold still. The cory is acting normally, I don't see any swelling, just the two red blotches. I'm wondering if maybe the cory accidentally settled down on top of the stingrays tail and got nicked, but I don't know if that was what caused it. This is the first time I've seen anything like this in the tank. It's also possible it happened from him trying to squeeze between two rocks or pieces of driftwood or something, since I've seen them do that fairly often.

I haven't gotten the numbers for A, Ni or Na, but I just did a 30% water change yesterday, so they wouldn't really reflect what's been going on over the last few days anyways. So I need to get quinine. Some of my fish now are hemmoraging, some of them have cotton like fungus on their mouths, some have fungus "discs" on their tail or gills.

And now I am noticing on the tops of my guppies and one gourami, before the dorsal fins, is losing color. What now? I'm currently treating the tank with quickcure AND erythromycin.

I'm thinking this might be a result of a broken heater that when I replaced it, I didn't raise the temp slowly enough.

Oh, I forgot:

ammonia 0; nitrite 0 nitrate <20. 25% water change on Saturday. Recently, there is a new growth, and I'm wondering if this is a cause for concern.

The new growths are scattered over the algea, sort of like a breakout od acne ... only in this case they are dime sized tn circles, with the certer half brown in color.

The only change I've made recently is to raise the water temp to 72-73, rather than the cool 70 I had been using.Population is primarily goldfish, with a beta, some snails, and some plecos for good measure

The 'rosettes' only appear on algae patches, and not on the gravel or pond ornaments. They are in the same
location on each side, and they look rather like ulcers. One is more pink
than the others which are very dark.

http://community.webshots.com/album/568662392CwMcMP#

Fish had a serious issue with letting me photograph both sides.

I put two slightly impure gneiss rocks from the family house in the Southern
Adirondacks in the tank two days ago in place of the two sick looking rusty
white quartz, so I checked all the water parameters carefully. They all
appear to be fine.

Ammonia - as close to 0 as I've ever seen it. The color was actually
yellow.

Nitrites - 0. As usual. It has always taken an Act of God for the
nitrites to rise in my tank, and a new bottle of test solution made no
difference.
Nitrates between 5 and 10.

GH between 8 and 9, as usual - compared to between 7 and 8 for the tap
water. (They seriously soften the tap water here.)

KH 3, as usual, compared to 4 for the tap water.

pH pretty much normal, but I was getting consistently inconsistent results
with my high range, normal range and wide range test solutions, and,
strangely, the newly prepared water in the bucket that's had air bubbled
through it was much lower ph than usual. I dumped it out on the lawn; Lord
knows what's up with that. pH of teh water out of the tap actually varies
between 9.0 and 8.4. When I tested it, the high range showed between 8,4
and 9.0 and definitely under 9.0, and the wide range showed atleast 9.0.

I scrubbed the rocks with dish washer detergent, soaked them in chlorox,
scrubbed them with bleach scouring powder, and then boiled them, before
putting them in the tank. My sister picked them up outside the house, and
not from a body of water.

Yours,
Dora Smith
Austin, TX
tiggernut24@yahoo.com
Problem with keeping my fish alive

I was given 4 baby convict fish by a friend to start off my new tank - I am not a novice but never had these fish before - over two weeks 10 other fish have died - I checked on the internet and find they are vicious - mine are only a half in ch long - how could this be? Now I have noticed that alot of the time they are all huddled together at the top of the tank around the heater...........there is plenty of filtration and I was thinking maybe I should add an airstone.....so I did this as well.

The other thing I did was after reading Davids question about the differences in substrate I thought hmmm maybe alot of their food is falling in between the marbles.....and as now there are no predators in the tank theres really no need for them, so I switched to gravels (which were taken from and established tank).

All water levels are where they should be....ammonia 0, nitrites 0, ph 6.9 -7.0, and nitrates are around 20.

Over the past 2 days the molly fry are dropping rapidly I cant figure out why I have done numerous water changes and testing the water alot....next thing I know I come in and theres more of the poor little things dead on the filter valve............what could be going on? I question this because I have probably 30 guppy fry and around 10 platy fry and NONE of them have died this is only affecting the mollies.

Any ideas guys? A lot of people said CO2 was necesary for my tank so I tried a couple times to get a DIY system to work and today I finally did! I was so excited, the little bubbles were coming out and getting caught in the diffuser and everything looked good. I left for work today at 5pm and came home and my boyfriend said both my male and female gouramis had died at like 8:00pm!!!!!! He had immediately removed the CO2 when he saw them dead and my other fish seem fine. The gouramis were both young, no disease present, swimming and eating normally. They were doing beautifully. Did the CO2 somehow kill them?????!!!! Very upset.....they were so beautiful and I was very proud...
