I have very hard water with high PH and ALK and low light. I try to look the species up but most web sites will only state what kind of light it can handle or if they are hard to kill. I have tropical fish, so I keep the tank on the warmer side. Can anyone recommend plants?

Plants For New Aquarium

I just set up a 55 gal. tank. I plan on using a glass cover for the tank, and would love to have 10k or what ever is correct and actinic for dusk and possibly some LEDs.

I am hoping someone has found a cheap top similar to this. Are there draw backs to having a light suspended from the edge of the tank. Or would I be better off with a close fitting hood.

This is going to be the first thing you see when you come into my house in the living room so I'm trying to keep it super clean and modern.

Thanks in advance !

Question about light

I am in the process of creating my first aquarium and I was planning on adding some live plants to help control the Nitrate levels and keep the Algae at bay! I have one of PetSmart's TopFin 10 gallon starter kits and it comes with Incandescant lights. I know my choice of plants is therefore limited, but I was considering adding some Java Fern because I've heard that it is very hardy. Will this plant (and any others) grow with Incandescant lights? I don't have the money to upgrade my lights right now, so I'd like to plant something that will work with my lights. (I've added some nice plastic plants, but I'd like to add some live ones to help make my tank healthy.)

plant sickness

Not great pictures, but as you can see I am having some die off on the bottom leaves only of my Carolina Bacopa. Has any one experienced this? From what I understand this is indicative of a some sort of major deficiency. When leaves on the bottom die but leaves on the top don't it is usually a mobile nutrient diffientcy. A mobile nutrient is one that leaves older leaves to support new growth when a deficiency occurs. Mobile nutrients are Pottasium, Nitrogen, Iron, Phosphorous, and I believe carbon.

The tips of the older leaves turn white at first and then the rest of the leaf eventually turns clear and dies.

10mth old tank

ph 7.8

ammonia 0

nitrite 0

nitrate 0

temp 78

4wpg at a 10 hr duration with a 1.5 hr break in the middle (for algea control)

15-20percent water changes a week.

Filigree and my ph levels

I am fairly new to the fish scene. I have tried to do all my research. I wanted to do my cycle the way i have read on here, but i live with my sister in law and had fish within 24 hours. However they were 8 feeder guppies, then about 24 hours later she brought home 3 bleeding heart tetras who proceded to eat 7 of the 8 guppies. My NH, NO, PH levels were fairly stable the last few days. i had a spike in NH and NO so i did a partial water change, my levels evened out. I had been over feeding and since corrected my habits, one feeding a day now, only what can be eaten in under 3 mins. I put in a filigree plant and 4 gold snails, 1 pleco, 1 red tailed shark. i retested my water today and my ph has dropped from 7 - 7.5 to 5, my NH and NO are slightly high.

My main question is will the Filigree effect my PH level and should i be concerned at this point?

I have a 29 gal tank.

6 Glofish

1 feeder guppy

1 common pleco

1 red tailed shark

3 bleeding heart tetras

4 gold snails

1 filigree

1 devil's ivy

maintain the tanks water about 78 degrees

have a whisper 100 air pump, and whatever came with my tank for filtration and lighting. i bought the tetra 29 tank from walmart if that helps.

Planted Aquarium

Hello all, first time EVER posting or topicing or blogging or whatever it is I am doing here, at any site, for anything, EVER. I am Dennis and I currently have a beautiful 125gl. freshwater tank. I have numerous tropical community fish happily swimming within its contents. I do have some questions as I just recently purchased the lights and the plants for my tank. I went to A. Botanic and purchased the "Hard to kill" package (cause I'm scared lol) and they honestly have been doing well for a week now. Here are my questions:
1) I've been told that once you add plants you can get rid of or remove your bubblers as the plants will now provide oxygen. Is this true or since I have a 125 and only the "hard to kill" package, do I not have enough plants yet?

2) only have gravel in the tank. Many "experts" have told me I'll be fine as long as I use the supplements, Fl Excel, etc.. is this true?

3) Brown Algae. Have had it before, have it now. Not worry because plants will take care of it?

For now, that's all I can think of, though I know I'll have more. If you have any advice, expert analysis, etc.. please feel free to post. I'm very excited to hear all of your thoughts and concerns as I just want my plants to not die and my fish to be happy. Now, for the tech: I have 257W at 6700K comp flour going on the tank, that is approximately 2W/gl for my 125 tank. I have a Fluval 405 Filtering it and my Marineland C-360 just started leaking after a week, so I am waiting for Marineland to send me a new one once I contact them on Mon. (Closed today). I have Neons, Red Minor, and Black Skirt Tetras, 2 Dw. Gouramis, 3 Siam. Alg. Eaters, 6 Peppered Cory's, 4 Harlequin Rasbora's (which apparently aren't Rasboras anymore), 2 Ghost Catfish and one German Blue Ram. I believe those are all the specs. I have added Seachem Plant Tabs to the gravel. One for about every 3 plants. So, out of the pack of 10 I've used 7. I've been adding Seachem Fl. Excel and the Iron. Um... 2 heaters for the tank maintaining a temp. of 78F.

So, I hope this isn't too long. I so am not good a this obviously. Any helpful suggestions etc.. please let me know. Again, I'm Dennis, 35/M, from VA. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Incredible blue-green algae

Fact: blue green algae is not an algae, but a bacteria known as cyanobacteria.

Our past is cool:
I ran across this interesting tidbit of information on blue green algae in a book about dinosuars (my son is a dino-nut).

Quote: The earliest traces of life have been found in Australia, in rocks that are 3,500 million years old. They are the fossilized remains of stromatolites - colonies of single celled cyanobacteria. These are bacteria that make food from water and co2 by photosynthesis; just as green plants do. They (cyanobacteria) were the only form of life on earth for nearly 3 billion years, and the ancestors of all living things.

When I read this, I thought no wonder this stuff is so hard to get rid of. It has been around forever and is some tough..... And by the quoted last sentence is my great (to the power of infinity) grand pappy. Hope you enjoyed a little dose of our past.

Source of quote: Dinosaur Atlas; an amazing journey through a lost world.

moss wall material

So I go to the local pet stores and hardware stores and I cannot find any plastic meshing for my moss wall. I purchased some plastic meshing from a craft store that is used for yarn stitching or whatever it is, http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3282/2504884775_7907ae9442_o.jpg (this picture will be better than my description). But I truly think that the holes in the mesh i got are three times to small. I have searched high and low for plastic mesh big enough but no luck. the only stuff i could find would be a perfect size would be metal but im not sure if it would be galvanized or not or if it would even be safe. any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! I've noticed that most of the largest diffusers available out there say that they're only for aquariums up to 75g. Are there any that are good for larger tanks? Otherwise, I was thinking I could just get two, one for either end of the tank, and split the co2 between them. That way the co2 would spread more evenly over the tank as well, rather than having very high co2 at one end and very low co2 at the other.

The other thing I want to ask about is what kind of diffuser you think is best. The glass tube with a frit at the end that the bubbles get pushed through, one of those tubes with bioballs inside that require a pump, or simply running the end of the co2 tubing into the intake of a small in-tank pump. Which is likely to give me the best diffusion? And won't break my pocketbook either...

Thanks!

Plants for Nitrates

What are good plants that eat nitrate? I kept having reoccuring BGA in a large clump of java moss even with repeted water changes and adding activated carbon to my filters.

It is so simple that I should have known. I was always afraid to vacuum the java moss directly for fear of crushing it. I finally got so frustrated with the BGA that I decided it was either leaving or I was getting rid of the java moss.

I firmly pressed down on the java moss with the end of the siphon and watched the organic material lift out of the java moss. This was sucked out of the tank. These organics are one of the typical culprits. I cut out the infected java moss and it hasn't returned since. That was about 3-4 weeks ago.

I do it to both of my clumps of java moss during every water change and they have never looked better.

Fyi

Did you know?

Many scavaging fish help to free trapped debris from the leaves of plants. Their movement through the plants helps to send this debris toward the filter where it can be captured. The removal of debris from the plant also allows more light to reach the leaves and reduces the odds that algae will be an issues.

carbon and fertilizer

does carbon in your filter take the important stuff out of plant fertilizers?

Need suggestions for growing Java Moss fast.

I noticed my Gouramis grazing on Java moss or the algae on them.

Pretty sure it was the tender ends of the moss, so if anyone has tried to speed grow it.
