My girlfriends H.O.T. canister filter is acting weird. I primed it, and turned it on, and for about 5 seconds, it works great, but then it sort of hiccups and just pulses.

I'm thinking it's a messed up turbine....any body ever had this problem, or know how to fix this?

Look at the impellor and see if its shredded.  On most power filters the impellor is the source of the problems.  If you dont see anything visible that it to the LFS and have them look at it.  Some of them may no nothing.  In that case ur only hope is to replace the impellor(give it a try) or replace the filter because other replacement parts are generally not sold.

I have a bunch of Marineland HOT Magnums on my tanks -- and the only thing that goes wrong is the impeller. It's just as you described it. Get a new impeller and all should be fine.

From what I hear from my LFS, the magnum is being absolete compare to other HOB powerfilters.  Mini HOB canisters in general are because they do not porcess as much as its bigger brothers and dont have the bio capicity of some HOB powerfilters.  Now there's way to expand their bio though.   Like there's an add on bio wheel for it.  I just know not many ppl buy them as much anymore.  I feel like they are great mechanical filters.  Especially if that's all you want it to do such a in a smaller saltwater tank where the protein skimmer does everything else.
