I want to move my tank in to a room I am setting up as my office for reflexology and massage. Is it ok to burn oils in the same room with the tank? I really want it in there for its soothing look as it will add to my customers relaxation and they will love it. However I do burn oils and candles too. Sure hoping this will work.

| I'm not sure, I wouldn't think it's a good idea. Those chemicals released from the burning oil could contaminate the water. If you plan on doing it' I would try to ventilate the room as much as possible and I would try to seal the top of the aquarium as much as possible. I would wait of others to offer their thoughts though. I have heard of a few people contaminating their tanks with household air fresheners. I would think that burning oil or scented candles would do the same.

| If the tank is a fish only it most likely wouldn't be a problem. If your keeping corals or other delicate inverts I don't think it would be the best idea. Sealing the top of the tank may help with the air born chemicals but may also cause the tank temperature to climb too high. Do you run a skimmer on the tank? If so try this. Burn some of the oils you typically use close to the tank. If the foam column in the skimmer collapses then the chemicals are having an influence on the tank. There again fish only probably OK. Corals I wouldn't try. Hope this helps. :)

If you must have an aquarium, I would go freshwater if you're going to be using oils and candles in the room. Saltwater invertebrates especially (but also fish to some degree) are very sensitive, and normally much smaller water changes are done on saltwater tanks meaning the contaminants would build up in the water. I would go with a nice freshwater tank, do 30% water changes every week, and run carbon continuously (replacing it weekly). I wouldn't normally worry about people burning a candle here and there with a freshwater tank in the room, but given that you probably do it a lot to help relax your customers, your case is slightly more cause for worry.
