I have so many plans swarming in my mind about the 10-g I plan to set up in my dorm room when college starts.  I love that pre-setup rush. ;)

I'm going to do a low-pH soft water setup, good lighting for fairly lush plantings; driftwood, and  slate, and stock with some smaller tetras (thanks for the input on that, FattFishy).

So for added spice in my community, I've decided to try shrimp.  Maybe a snail here and there, but I'm keen on trying out shrimp, which I've never worked with before.

Unfortunately, there's a reason I've never worked with shrimp.  They're impossible to find around here.  :(

I don't exactly live in the epicenter of aquaculture.  There are two small pet stores near me, a specialty aquarium store 45 minutes away, and the nearest city has a Petco and a Petsmart.  So my question is twofold:  Do larger chains stock these critters?  The Petco is brand-new, so I don't know if it's a common item there.  I saw one bamboo shrimp there for ten bucks.  Seems a bit high for a shrimp.

The second question is, if the larger chains don't have them (I'm looking for red cherry shrimp in particular but I'll take what I can get), is it possible to have a smaller store order  them from their supplier?  I've never tried that before, so I don't know if they can or if they have to order a big shipment wholesale.

I really want shrimp!  Thanks in advance for any input on the matter.

Actually, large chain stores like PetSmart or Petco will sell ghost shrimp. Live for about 1.25 years, hardy, fun to watch, and cheap. About 33 cents here. Buy a bunch, about 5 for the 10 gallon and you'll see them walking around looking for food.

Other shrimp can be amano shrimp, bumblebee shrimp, or blueberry shrimp. Of course there are more but obviously rarer, check the Pinned Topics for a topic that has a list of them. Who knows? a rare shrimp might be common or easy to get in your area.

In places like Petco, they can special order fish or invertebrates for you. Or, at least they do it here... Try special ordering 10 of them. Buying in bulk prevents you from having to order them constantly and usually will give you a discount.

If RCS (red cherry shrimp) is an option, then getting a group will work best. Although they might reproduce like bunnies. Just be careful on that part.

One final note, add the shrimp after your tank is done cycling. Shrimp are sensitive to ammonia and copper... but I don't think copper should be a problem.

Good luck on the new shrimps!

Most stores, even your smaller local stores, should have a list of available fish at their supplier. Most of them will only stock the regularly bought or popular species of fish and inverts, but that does not mean those are the only ones they can get. I would call or visit each store and ask if they can order any different species not currently stocked. They should be more than happy to work with you, since if they can order it, they can make a sale.
