I got up this morning and checked on my fish. Last night everyone was fine but this morning it looked as if one of my bettas eyes was exploding out of his head! I immediately took him out of the tank and put him in a hospital tank. I am posting a picture to make sure this is popeye..sorry if it isn't an amazing pic.  If it is what should I do besides medication?

Do a 25-50% water change. That is the only thing possible to be done if you're not sure about something.

Popeye is a symptom of a bacterial infection, so feed it medicated flakes. Those flakes taste bad to fish, so if you have to, feed it mixed in with your betta's favorite meal.

Hopefully the hospital tank is cycled? If not.... it'll just get worse, a lot worse.

it's not necessarily an infection if it happened that suddenly. Such sudden inflation makes me think of an injury. Either way, water changes are definitely a good idea. Keep the water quality good. The medicated flakes aren't a bad idea even if it's an injury, because they'll help keep infection at bay.

Hey guys thanks for the advice. I am fearing that my chinese algae eater may have something to do with this...I am trying to find a new home for him since I like so many others didn't realize what they turn into. I'll try the medicated flakes and have done a small water change in the hospital tank. Thanks guys I hope he pulls through!

Good... keep us updated on the betta and his progress.

If the Chinese Algae Eater do something, it's probably that he sucked off the slime coat or caused an injury to the betta. But still, the betta could've done it himself accidently. If the slime coat was sucked off, then a bacterial infection is pretty high. Of course, it's also possible it didn't happen. How big/old is the CAE?

Is the hospital tank cycled/seeded?

Yes the hospital tank is cycled. The CAE is at least 2 years old and about 2.5 inches. I am suspecting him because he is already pretty aggressive to the other fish in the tank plus I have seen him suction onto the betta's body before. I had a betta in the hospital tank so I just switched them over and as soon as I put the betta in the community tank the CAE went right for him and suctioned onto him..took off some scales = ( . The CAE is now in his own bucket and hopefully now both my bettas will recover. ARGH!
