Sad that it happened... but it should never happen again; to anyone.

If I were you, I'd just show a little vengeance... although it's my nature not yours. The betta probably is one of your very favorite fish... I'd cull that CAE. But was it really the CAE's fault? Did he attack Ozzymandias?

Sorry to hear about loss of you betta. It sucks when something like this happens. I had a German Ram that came down with popeye a few months back. I had to put her down.

I don't think it makes sense take revenge on an animal. (Moby*** comes to mind) Many fish behave this way when they get bigger.

I would try to give it away or return it to the store for free before you consider destroying the animal.

Yes, I was pretty upset.  I was just so proud of Ozzymandias because he had gotten so big and all his fins were fully grown in. He was beautiful. I'm not going to kill the CAE. I know it is in his nature and you can't get mad at a fish for its instinct.  I'm going to try and find a home for him. Thanks for the support guys.

I've heard many dreadful stories of CAE killing or injuring peoples' favorite fishes. It's just annoying how many fish stores still sell the little devil.

If I were you, I'd either donate him or cull him in a freezer.

That's just wrong... the betta that recovered is harmed again. I mean, it probably went through some tough times to recover but the CAE just HAD to tear off a few scales. Ok... I'm done.

No medication besides the flakes for caution. Some medication can be unnecessary and kill the bacteria.[/quote]

When you say "cull him in a freezer" do you man freeze him to death? I know he hurt her betta and I hope he gets better. I have a betta too. I just don't think killing him inhumanely is the answer. There are humane ways to euthanize a fish. I think taking him back to the aquarium store is the answer. It's not really eye for an eye when speaking of fish.

IMHO, you should take the Chinese Algae Eater back to the lfs where you bought it, and read them the riot act. These fish really are useless to the hobby -- they are just cheap and have "algae eater" in their name. Not only do they grow large, and can harm fish, but once they realize that the Flake Food Fairy comes on a regular basis and tosses food in for them, they don't do much on algae.

Sorry for your loss. That's tough. I almost got a CAE for my tank, but was warned against it because of how savage they can become.Obviously, the best option for getting rid of a fish is adoption or returning it. If these are not options, euthanasia is your bet bet. But do it HUMAINELY! As for "Culling" in the freezer, I've read that it's quite humane. It slows their metabolism gently so they more or less "Go to sleep" and stay asleep. No pain involved. I've never done this, but quite a few books suggest it. Another humane thing to do is add some clove oil to the water in a bowl and put the fish in. This is also listed in many books as an alternative. I say this because my friend recently flushed his fish ALIAVE down the toilet because they became aggressive. Now this is certainly the worst way to die. Wallowing in sewage for hours is not my idea of a good way to go. Please don't flush fish.
