| What is the typical lifespan for apple snails? Also can they live on just algae that builds up in the aquarium or do you need to provide some type of other food for them?

| I'm not sure about the maximum lifespan of an apple snail, but it seems like they'd live for as long as they're cared for, really. Keep their water conditions right and don't let them develop shell problems and they'll last you several years. Your snails will do an excellent job of feeding themselves off of what your fish leave behind - as long as you're feeding your fish properly, there will be some leftovers, and the snails will eat that. I wouldn't keep a snail in a bare tank and expect it to feed off of algae, but simple scavenging should do; you won't have to add any special food for the little guys.

apple snails, don't quote me, live for 3-5 years, I think, if cared for properly. They will live a shorter lifespan than that if you only feed them on fishfood leftovers, but I don't know by how much. Apple snails can get to be a decent size and eventually, that just won't be enough food for them.
Keep the water quality right and supplement the food occasionally with high-calcium foods like spinach, for example. I have a better list of foods somewhere, but it's my bedtime. I'll come back int he morning. :P
