| I'm having trouble determining the genders of some of my fish. I've posted pics of them. at the top is my severum and at the bottom is my small school of red & blue colombian tetras (how many are male and how many are female? They range from 1.5" to 2" long). Also, i would like to know if my severum is a green or turquoise severum (its almost 3" long including the tail. when do they star to color up?), and I would like to know if it is possible for me to breed my tetras in my tank right now. severum:

38 gallon freshwater: 1 turquoise/green severum (spike), 4 red& blue columbian tetras, 2 gold gouramis (shimmer & glimmer), 3 otocinclus, 1 clown loach (tigger) 30 gallon saltwater: 1 coral beauty angel (vertigo), 1 clarkii clown (crusty - his old anemone was named sideshow bob), 1 banded coral shrimp, 1 serpent star, lots of macroalgae

| AHH! Big pictures. I'm not good at sexing fish that aren't told apart easily so... did you check www.badmanstropicalfish.com/profile.html? It has a lot of information there... they also probably have some sexing info too.

| It's difficult to distinguish sexes in non-dimorphic fish from just pictures. I can't eyeball the animals from all angles and check the most subtle differences. Generally, your female fish will be wider and more robust than the males. Look at the fish from above. Are certain ones thicker than others? Do some have deeper bodies? Males are going to be a bit more streamlined. But this variety of tetra will show almost no difference in the sexes because of its natural body shape. These fish will not pair off for any length of time, so distinguishing them is not of utmost importance - as long as you have a few males and a few females, things should be fine. But you need at least six, and a specialized setup. I only saw four tetras in those pictures.

all i can tell you is that your Severum is a female I have a male his fins on top and bottom come all the way out to his tail fin

| If the severum is still immature, it will not have developed the longer finnage. The fish is either immature, or a female, however - it has not yet developed the typical "male cichlid forehead bulge".

well just looking at how round the fins are its safe to say its female!
