I want to buy two tanks, one for freshwater and one for saltwater. Should I buy the same tank twice or should I choose different brands?
Both tanks will be desktop versions around 10 or 12 gallons.

marineland has a saltwater version of the eclipse, it comes with everything you need to get started, is 12 gallons and runs between 130-150 dollars.
Then of course you could get the marineland eclipse for the freshwater tank as they have a freshwater version as well. The freshwater version is usually around a hundred bucks or so.
There are other nano tank brands as well. You will likely save a decent amount just buying a nano kit vs starting from scratch for such a small tank.

Have you kept SW tanks before? they are a lot harder to maintain.

I would not say harder, just more time consuming for SW.:)

I'll be setting up the freshwater tank first. Then tackling the saltwater tank. I had a saltwater tank for about 8 months but the results were disastrous. I used the same set up from a previous freshwater tank.
I'm gonna do my homework. Trust me. I'm still about two months away.
