I've never heard of water lettuce before. You should take a picture.

I am assuming it's this plant:

Pistia stratiotes

From plantgeek.net: "Normally a pond plant, it will require good lighting to do well in the aquarium. "

The plant needs medium high lighting and is a moderately difficult plant. Most likely, this plant will die if it's not given around 3-3.5 wpg.

I've heard of wisteria and duckweed also referred to as water lettuce before.  That said, a pic or a confirmation on FattFishy's picture would be really helpful.

If it's the Pistia mentioned above, it's going to need very strong light to thrive in your tank.  It makes a good addition to open ponds because it loves sunlight, so make sure you've got quite a lot of watts over your tank for best growth.

I have water lettuce outside in my ponds during the summer, and it grows like a weed. In the winter, like starting now, I bring it inside, and I have it growing on the top of 2 -- 120 gallon tanks, each one of which has a 2 -- 54 watt T5 lamps on it. Inside it grows very small, but it still keeps growing, and I harvest it weekly and feed it to my koi in the indoor pond. Come next spring, I will just toss some outside and we start the whole cycle over again.

I've been looking for water lettuce.  I want it for my goldfish tank.  Lucky you.
